Chapter1 - Country

Pocahontas  is a beautiful country. When you wake up in the morning the birds sing marvelous songs. There are lots of parrots and wonderful colorful birds, there's also Flamingos. It is a very hot country. Once it was over 50 degrees. The city is filled with lights and tall skyscrapers. All houses are humongous. There are all sorts of flowers. Tall ones, Short ones, big fat ones, small thin ones and many more.

Lots of people roam the streets at night. Everything there is fashionable. But one thing that was not good was the schools. In  school you have to wear purple laces with your shoes  and green skirt or pants and a yellow top otherwise you get kicked out of the school. By the way the Purple laces, green pants or skirt and the yellow top  are very expensive. They cost $500 each!!! Every evening the town comes together wearing pink. The girls and woman wear pink ball gowns while the boys and men wear pink suits. We all sing the national anthem and then we go back home and enjoy our big dinner.

Check out my google drawing about recycling. I did this because we recently went on a trip to the Visy recyclinhg center I learnt a lot of new things and I wanted to share my learning with others. I learnt about what to recycle and not to recycle. What do you think about recycling? Did you know that 2.5 million tones of rubbish is burried in New Zealand but 3/4 of that could have been saved? 

Decimals

Today in maths we were learning about decimals and what each number means. Eg: 1.36 the 1 means that we have 1 whole, the 3 means that we split a whole into 10 equal pieces and we have 3 of them and the 6 means that we have a whole and we split it into 100 equal pieces and I have 6 of the pieces. The way to say it is one point three six not one point thirty six.

Fairy Tale Maths Problem

Once upon a time ...

the wicked witch of the west needed to go to the dentist to get her ugly teeth fixed. The dentist was 36km away. Her broomstick could only fly 6km every hour.  

How many hours will it take her to get to the dentist?

In class we were looking at fairy tales. We decided in maths that we would write a story problem using a fairy tale Character. We had to make a problem that could be solved with times tables.

Milly just got a new pet fish. The pet shop owner told her that she needs to put the fish into exactly one litre of water. The problem is she can only find two containers. One container holds 7 litres and the other container holds 4 litres of water.

Can you use these two containers to put exactly one litre of water into the fish tank?

The answer is yes. Because you fill the 4 litre container and you pour it into the 7 litre container. Now  the seven litre container  can only hold 3 litres of water because 4 + 3 = 7. Now I filled the 4 litre container again. Then I poured it  into the seven litre container until it got filled to the top. Now I was left with 1 litre in the four litre container.  Now Millie can pour the 1 litre of water from the container into the fish tank.
